Free stuff

There’s a moment in many of our lives… where we quietly realise: We’ve been trying to save our parents. To fix what hurt them. To carry what they couldn’t. To make things right… in ways that were never ours to make. Sometimes it shows up as over-caring. Sometimes as responsibility. Sometimes as a silent hope that if we just do enough… they’ll finally be okay. But there comes a point where something deeper is asked of us. Not more effort. Not more fixing. But a different kind of truth. A truth that can feel both freeing… and confronting: “Mum, I can’t save you.” “Dad, I can’t save you.” Not because we don’t love them. But because love doesn’t mean carrying what was never ours. We can acknowledge: “I see what you went through.” “I see what shaped you.” “I honour everything that came before me.” And at the same time: “I will stay in my place as the child.” “You are the big ones. I am the little one.” “And I leave your relationship, your pain, your choices… with you.” There is a humility in this. A returning to order. A quiet strength in no longer trying to be the one who fixes it all. Because the truth is… we don’t free our parents by saving them. We free ourselves by letting them carry what is theirs. And when we do that… something shifts. Energy comes back. Life comes back. Choice comes back. “I will take the life you gave me… and I will do something good with it.” Not by saving you. Sometimes what we feel… isn’t actually ours. A heaviness in the chest. A sense of anxiety that doesn’t quite make sense. Patterns that keep repeating, even when we’ve done the work. In systemic work, we begin to ask a different question: “Is this mine?” Not everything we carry started with us. Some of it belongs to those who came before us. Some of it was picked up through love, loyalty, or the deep need to belong. So we pause. We bring awareness into the body. And we gently ask: Is this mine? Or does this belong to my family system? My mum’s side? My dad’s side? And often… the body knows. There can be a softening. A shift. A sense of space where there was once weight. And if it’s not ours… we don’t need to keep carrying it. We can acknowledge it with respect. We can honour where it came from. And we can let it move. Not by pushing it away… but by recognising: “This belongs to you… and I will leave it with you.” Sometimes that’s enough. Sometimes that’s the beginning of something new. We don’t just remember our past we are pulled by it. What remains unresolved in our system doesn’t disappear. It lives quietly beneath the surface, shaping what we feel drawn to, the relationships we choose, and the patterns we repeat. Not because something is wrong with us. But because something is still seeking resolution. There is a deep loyalty at play. A belonging that says, “I will carry this too, so I don’t lose connection.” And so we find ourselves in familiar pain… again and again… until something in us begins to see. There comes a moment where we gently acknowledge: this happened. this was. this belonged to those before me. And in that moment, something shifts. We don’t have to reject where we come from. We don’t have to fix it all. Sometimes the movement is simpler, and more profound. To bow to the fate of those who came before us. To honour their struggles, their losses, their unfinished stories. And then… to turn. To also allow in what was good. What was resourced. What gave life. Because that, too, belongs to us.
